Follow the RSPB trails around the reserve, venturing past the old Sidlesham tramway, along the pebbly beach, and to Pagham Harbour's neighbouring reserve, Medmerry, the largest open coast realignment site in the UK and one of the largest in Europe.

Recent January 2026 sightings at RSPB Pagham Harbour include wintering specialists like Red Knot (200+), Ruff, Spotted Redshank, and Peregrine Falcon. Hundreds of Brent Geese and Wigeon are present, alongside sightings of European Stonechat, Common Buzzards, and Cattle Egrets. The North Wall and Sidlesham Ferry areas remain active for waders.

The RSPB hosts a lot events at Pagham and you are welcome to take part. Details of the events such as cost and location can be found in the following link: RSPB Pagham Harbour Events

Chichester District Council has been supporting The Manhood Wildlife & Heritage Group with their project to monitor water quality in East Beach Pond, Selsey. The group contacted the council’s Environmental Strategy Team last year and were put in contact with the Environment Agency. As a result, the group were loaned a sonde and telemetry unit, similar to those used in Chichester Harbour and at West Pole as part of the ongoing CHASM Project.

The aim of the East Beach Pond Group is to get some baseline monitoring data which will be used to see what types of submerged aquatic plants might be able to grow in the pond to enhance biodiversity and improve oxygen levels. In addition, the group also want to see how water composition varies during the course of a year.

Here is the live link to the East Beach Pond water quality telemetry data:

To help the East Beach Pond Group gain the most they can from the data, a training course in sonde data analysis took place in January 2026. This will enable the group to gain as much knowledge as possible from the data collected to date, and in future. The training was delivered by the Environment Agency’s National Water Quality Instrumentation Service(NWQIS) and Meteor Communications.

An article on the recent sonde work undertaken by the East Beach Pond Group is being published in the spring edition of CDC’s Initiatives magazine, which has the potential to reach 124,100 residents.

Natural England launched a new strategy for growth, health and security at the end of 2025. The strategy highlights climate change as a growing risk to marine ecosystems and seafood supply. It commits to ecosystem‑based management of seas, restoring habitats to improve resilience and supporting nature‑friendly fisheries to enhance food security. The strategy links healthy seas to climate adaptation, aiming to rebuild marine biodiversity, protect coastal communities and ensure sustainable seafood production while contributing to Net Zero and wider climate resilience goals.

The recent surge in the sea temperatures around the coast has driven huge changes in marine ecosystems. The UK’s seas have experienced their warmest start to any year since records began, with average surface temperatures in the seven months to the end of July more than 0.2°C higher than any year since 1980, according to BBC analysis of provisional Met Office data. This seemingly modest increase represents a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of Britain’s marine ecosystems, as warming waters reshape species distribution and challenge traditional fishing communities.

Sussex Bay is developing a 'Strategic Blueprint for Sussex Bay', a forward looking plan designed to enhance our marine and coastal environments. This blueprint will take a seascape approach, recognising Sussex Bay as a dynamic mosaic of interconnected habitats shaped by natural processes and human activities.

The blueprint will outline a shared vision for Sussex Bay, setting clear objectives for pressure removal, protection, and restoration. We’ll work closely with experts and stakeholders, using the best available evidence and addressing critical data gaps to drive effective, sustainable actions.

The A1 Submarine is a Historic Protected Wreck and a key location for sediment and biota monitoring for the CHASM project because, being a fixed point on the seabed, it is relatively easy to access and monitor. We are extremely fortunate that the Wreck Licensee Martin Davies is a big supporter of CHASM, and has enabled a huge amount of in situ sediment data to be gathered in the vicinity of the A1 and from other local sites.

In its latest report, the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) sets out that Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS) form a crucial part of the picture in helping government strike the balance between its growth ambitions and its environmental commitments, as they drive delivery of nature recovery action and inform local decision-making.

In the Executive Summary and Recommendations, the report states:

They are intended to be strategies that act as an enabling mechanism for delivery of on-the-ground action and decision-making.

It goes on to say:

Our findings and recommendations are principally strategic in nature and focus on actions to be taken at a national scale. However, we note that at the local level, the success or otherwise of LNRS will largely be driven by effective local leadership, partnerships, and action. This is something of particular relevance to MPP partners.
