Coastal Community Team
In a successful demonstration of partnership working, MPP partners were awarded £10,000 by the Department of Communities & Local Government. This enabled them to establish one of the 116 new Coastal Community Teams created nationally in 2015. Chichester District Council’s Economic Development Department in association with with Selsey Town Council and other members of the Manhood Peninsula Partnership, worked hard to secure the funding.
The new local team, called the Peninsula Coastal Economy Team, is affiliated to the Manhood Peninsula Partnership and includes local councils, parishes and businesses.
The announcement was made on 17th June 2015 by Coastal Communities Minister Mark Francois, who gave his support to over 100 new local teams that will help revive England’s seaside towns. The Government has provided more than £1 million to fund 104 further Coastal Community Teams, on top of 12 existing pilots, to help bring jobs, growth and prosperity back to our coastal areas.
The award of £10,000 partially funded two projects in Selsey and East Wittering & Bracklesham that were identified as priorities. There is also an economic plan for the area, which was the compulsory element of the scheme to be completed by all grant recipients. The projects were completed following the receipt of of additional funding kindly provided by Chichester District Council.
Peninsula Coastal Economy Team Projects:
- Coastal Economic Plan.
- Selsey Harbour (Selsey Haven) Preliminary Consultation Document: a technical investigation into the feasibility, costs and environmental implications of constructing a small harbour or haven for Selsey that will ultimately generate economic opportunities for the town.
- Demographics Report: a report on demographics and employment development in Selsey and East Wittering & Bracklesham. The research and recommendations will benefit local businesses including those involved with tourism, and will investigate the following issues:
- The quality of employment opportunities, education & training locally.
- The impacts of seasonality and how this links to issues creating barriers to work such as transport, childcare, accessibility of the workplace and skills.
Future funding:
Teams will also be able to access the £90m funding confirmed in the recent Budget that is being made available to allow the Coastal Communities Fund to continue. They can also bid for the new £3m Coastal Revival Fund for local heritage and facilities, which is now available for applications. In future funding may also be sought from the new European & Marine Fisheries Fund due to become available later this year.
ICZM 2011 - Coastal Change Pathfinder
In late 2009 the Government awarded £11 million in grants to local authorities who demonstrated the best and most innovative ideas for dealing with and adapting to coastal change.
